Our Founder's Story
Gregory Greene
Hailing from Miami, Gregory Greene was raised in the warm embrace of a church community that instilled in him a deep sense of compassion for the homeless. Witnessing the struggles of those less fortunate in his neighborhood sparked within him a desire to lend a helping hand whenever he could. He understood that behind every weathered face on the streets could be someone's beloved father or grandfather.
After a turbulent youth, Gregory found his path through Job Corps, acquiring a trade that promised a brighter future. So when an opportunity arose to work in "Rome," he eagerly seized it, only to discover that it was Rome, Georgia, not the illustrious Rome of Italy. Embracing the twist of fate, he settled into life in the quaint town of Rome, Georgia.
When the pandemic descended upon the world in 2020, Gregory found himself on a routine trip to Harbor Freight, passing through the Central Shopping Center. Amidst the hustle and bustle, a divine whisper urged him to stop and converse with a homeless person he passed by. Though initially hesitant, the persistent tug at his heart compelled him to make a pact with God: if they made eye contact, he would stop.
Sure enough, as Gregory left Harbor Freight, he found himself inexplicably drawn back to the same spot where the homeless woman lingered. Despite her back turned to him, their eyes met as if orchestrated by a higher power.
Recognizing this as a divine appointment, Gregory stepped out of his comfort zone and engaged her in conversation. He inquired about her needs and where she could find assistance. It became clear that accessing food and support services posed a significant challenge, especially for those unable to venture downtown during daylight hours.
Determined to make a difference, Gregory promised to return the next day, a Wednesday, with a steaming hot meal in hand. The following day, Gregory returned home with a newfound sense of purpose. With determination in his heart, he set out to prepare a hearty meal for the woman he had encountered in the shopping center parking lot. As he handed her the warm meal, her gratitude filled the air, igniting a spark within Gregory that illuminated his path for "Fork, Spoon and Plate" to be born.
His humble ministry initially saw him as the sole server. However, the community's warmth and generosity soon rallied around him, forming a dedicated team he affectionately referred to as his "Teamsters."
From its modest beginnings, Fork, Spoon, and Plate burgeoned into a beacon of hope for the West Rome community, offering sustenance and support on a weekly basis. With each passing Wednesday, Gregory's gratitude swelled for the unwavering backing of the community, pledging to continue his mission of aid.
Gregory attributes the success of the ministry to Jesus Christ, his Lord and Savior, acknowledging the transformative impact of the people who have rallied behind it. While Gregory remains a devout member of his Cornerstone Church, Fork, Spoon, and Plate operates independently, supported by a network of donors and volunteers who contribute to its growth and sustainability.
With the help of his dedicated teamsters, Gregory ensures that those in need are catered to with compassion and dignity. Three tables stand as pillars of support: one laden with hot meals, another offering provisions for the days ahead, and a third stocked with essential supplies for outdoor living.
What sets this ministry apart is its unwavering commitment to reaching those marginalized by their circumstances, bridging the gap for the residents of West Rome who may otherwise lack access to essential services. Fork, Spoon, and Plate epitomize the power of community and the resilience of the human spirit in times of need.
